The equity Alliance Annual Report 2024
This year marked another milestone in The Equity Alliance’s journey to unapologetically build independent Black political and economic power across Tennessee. With an unwavering commitment to community, we amplified voices, tackled challenges, celebrated victories, and set a course for a more equitable future.
Our 2024 Annual Report highlights the immeasurable impact we’ve made together:
- Over 2.2 million voter contacts through phone banks, text campaigns, mailers, and door-to-door engagement.
- 490+ voter registration events empowering communities across the state.
- $300,000+ in direct services provided to families and individuals in need.
- Restored voting rights for returning citizens by eliminating $170,000 in fines and fees.
- Doubled the reach of our LiberTEA Collective, graduating 25 liberators to grow Tennessee’s next generation of Black leaders.
We expanded our impact into Rutherford and Montgomery Counties, registered thousands of college students through our HBCU/Collegiate Outreach, and mobilized a historic Day on the Hill with over 100 advocates calling for legislative change.
From voter education initiatives to cultural events like the Black on Buchanan Juneteenth Block Party and transformative programs like The Shut Up & Voter Engagement Statewide Tour and the LiberTEA Collective Youth Fellows programs, we’ve ensured that Black Tennesseans are equipped to lead, thrive, and shape the future they deserve.
A Letter From Our CEO
Reflecting on 2024, Co-Founder and CEO Tequila Johnson reminds us:
“This year, we witnessed the resilience of our people. Together, we claimed the space we deserved and rose to the challenge of shaping a civic and political movement driven by our voices, our power, and our vision for change. We’re ready to continue this fight for a better, more just Tennessee in 2025 and beyond.”
Why It Matters
Tennessee ranks among the lowest in voter turnout, with just 12.7% of young Tennesseans voting in recent elections. Yet, our work is about more than voting. It’s about building people-centered political power, empowering communities, and challenging systems of inequity.
In 2024, we:
- Launched The BlackPrint Strategic Plan to advocate for Black Tennesseans on issues like education, healthcare, housing, and reparations.
- Led rallies to fight environmental injustices and hold public officials accountable.
- Expanded our Faithful Voter initiative, deepening relationships with Black churches to increase voter turnout.
This is the work that transforms communities and changes lives.
