Who we are

A sophisticated organization designed to create change at every level.

The Equity Alliance operates as a strategic multi-entity network that maximizes our impact across different areas of power-building:

Our 501(c)(3) foundation handles nonpartisan civic education, leadership development, and community research. Our 501(c (4) advocacy organization leads direct policy campaigns and legislative advocacy without lobbying restrictions. The Tennessee Black Voter Project focuses specifically on voter registration and election mobilization. Our economic development entity works on wealth-building initiatives and community investment.

This structure allows us to educate voters, advocate for policies, run campaigns, and build economic power—all while staying coordinated and strategic.

Our Inside-Outside Strategy We build independent community power through organizing and mobilization while simultaneously placing allies in key institutional positions where decisions get made.

This creates pressure from multiple directions that drivesreal change. Geographic Reach We operate through local chapters we call Alliances in Nashville, Memphis and Clarksville with plans to expand into additional communities across Tennessee.

what we do

We use six strategic approaches to build lasting power:

  • Community Organizing

We meet people in barbershops, churches, nightclubs, and living rooms—building authentic relationships and political power 365 days a year. Our organizers create spaces where civic engagement feels natural, not forced.

  • Voter Mobilization

The Tennessee Black Voter Project runs the state's largest voter engagement program. We register and mobilize voters who have been systematically excluded, transforming who participates in democracy.

  • Leadership Development

Our LiberTEA Collective trains the next generation of Black civic leaders with real skills in organizing, policy analysis, and campaign management. We build a leadership pipeline that keeps our movement growing.

  • Policy Advocacy

We monitor legislation, challenge harmful policies, and champion reforms on voting rights, economic development, criminal justice, and quality-of-life issues. We shape debates instead of just reacting to them.

  • Coalition Building

We forge strategic alliances that amplify our collective impact while staying firmly rooted in Black leadership and community priorities.

  • Education & Engagement

We provide Black communities with the knowledge to understand how political processes affect their daily lives and how to take action for change.

Current Priority Campaigns:

  • Universal Childcare (#Childcare4All)

With 41% of Tennessee families spending most of their income on childcare, we're fighting to cap costs and increase state funding.

  • Housing Justice

Creating pathways to homeownership, fighting displacement in gentrifying neighborhoods, and ensuring development benefits existing communities.

  • Environmental Justice

Addressing environmental racism and ensuring Black communities have a voice in decisions affecting their health and safety.
